New-graduate residencies, and which ones sponsor

Two problems, and they compound.

The windows are very short. New graduate residencies do not hire on a rolling basis. Most large systems post for somewhere between 24 hours and eight days, five to seven months before the cohort starts. Houston Methodist’s winter window in 2026 ran five days in August for a January start. UCLA Health’s spring cohort was open one week in September for a March start. Emory publishes the mapping in plain language: graduate February through May, apply in December.

Almost none of them say whether they sponsor. We checked the residency pages of Houston Methodist, UCLA, Emory, Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, Harborview and Brigham. Not one mentions visa sponsorship. You cannot tell from the page whether applying is worth your time.

What to do about the windows

Build a watchlist before you need it. Pick six to ten systems, find the careers page for each, and note when the window opened last cycle. Most run roughly the same calendar year to year. Then check weekly in the month before it is due.

Missing a window costs a domestic classmate four months. It costs you four of your twelve.

What to do about sponsorship

Ask before you apply, not after you interview. Email the nurse recruiter:

I am completing my BSN in [month] and will hold work authorization through [date]. Does [organization] sponsor for new graduate RN roles, and is the organization H-1B cap-exempt?

Two sentences, and the answer tells you whether to spend a week on the application.

One structural note

Some systems, Johns Hopkins among them, enroll new graduates in their residency automatically when they are hired, with no separate residency application. There the gate is the job posting rather than the residency. Worth knowing, because it changes what you are watching for.

The degree question

Most large residencies require a BSN or entry-level MSN. If you hold an associate degree, some systems do accept you: UW Medicine’s Harborview program takes associate, bachelor’s and master’s graduates within the last twelve months. Read ADN graduates before you build a plan, because getting hired is not the hard part of that route.
